Kanayo O. Kanayo @60: “I Sold Akamu and Agidi to Survive”

When the name Kanayo O. Kanayo is mentioned, what comes to mind of many is money ritual. This is not because he actually engages in money rituals, but only because he is known to have starred in many Nollywood movies where he took the role of unrepentant ritualist. Apparently, the name Kanayo O. Kanayo is synonymous to money rituals in Nollywood world.

His real name is Anayo Modestus Onyekwere. He is a Nigerian actor and lawyer, who has made a landmark in the film industry. He was born on March 1, 1962 in Mbaise, Imo state, Nigeria, and has starred in over 100 movies.

Just recently, Kanayo O. Kanayo celebrated his 60th birhday, where he revealed that he had sold Akamu and Agidi to survive at a certain stage of his life.

Akamu is a fermented cereal pudding from Nigeria, typically made from maize, sorghum, or millet, and also called Pap. Agidi, on the other hands, could be referred to as Nigeria’s wobbly Jello like meal. It’s prepared just the way pap is, but with just a little difference. These two were sold on the street of Oboama Ezinihitte Mbaise by Kanayo. O. Kanayo, according to a tweet from his official twitter handle on Wednesday.

The life story of Kanayo O. Kanayo is that of struggles and hope. A life that teaches how perseverance, hardword and consistency could take any aspiring person to the very peak of his potential.

Kanayo made his debut movie appearance in 1992 in the film Living in Bondage. With dedication and hardwork, he was nominated in 2008 for African Movie Academy Award for Best Actor in the movie “Across the Niger. He would later go on to become a force and name to reckon with in the film industry, and has since gained national recognition.

Kanayo was among various Nigerians honored by the government in 2014 during the centenary celebration. He went on to study Law from the University of Abuja, and graduated in the year 2018. He also finished his Law School from the Abuja Law School located at Bwari, Abuja in the year 2020.

Whoever saw these arrays of achievements would hardly beleive that Kanayo O. Kanayo started from nowhere. He started from the street hawking and struggling to survive. An indication that you can also make it no matter your background.
