The Nigerian Police have reportedly dismissed three policemen from service in the Ogun State Command for forcefully extorting money from a traveler along Lagos-Abeokuta express way, Channels Television has reported.
The three dismissed police officers, Inspector Sunday John, Sergeant Jimoh Asimiya, and Sergeant Solomon Adedolapo were guilty of extortion of a huge amount of one hundred and fifty-three thousand Naira (N153,000) from the victim when he was on trip to Lagos from Abeokuta.
Ogun State Commissioner of Police, Edward Awolowo Ajogun announced the immediate arrest and detention of the three police officers in a statement issued Today, after he became aware of the extortion via social media trend.
In his statement, the Commissioner stated that the money being extorted by the culprits was recovered from them and completely returned to the victim. He stressed that they were subsequently arraigned for departmental orderly room trial on a three-count charge of corrupt practices, discreditable conduct and disobedience to lawful orders.
After all the necessary, interrogation, the culprits were found guilty of all the charges, and subsequently dismissed from the service to serve as a lessons to others.
The victim, who was present at the trial, hailed the police for their good work. He also said that the whole incident has resurrected his hope in the Nigeria Police Force.
CP Ajogun, therefore, called on the general public to always choose it as an habit to report any act of misconduct from any police officer of the command personally to him and any complaints reported will be treated as a matter of urgency.
