Yorubas are blessed with a very unique culture, language and tradition. Apart from learning the proper ways of communication in the Yoruba language, there are many grandiloquence one has to learn in order to become a perfect Yoruba speaker.

Among some of the unique add ups in Yoruba speaking are parables, adages, proverbs and many more.

Have you ever wondered and wanted to know about how our forefathers got to derive some of the adages we used to hear while growing up?

According to research, some of the adages were derived from past occurrences and one of them will be treated in this article. If you have heard about “Eni tíkò sebí aláà árù l’óyìngbò, Kòlè sebí Adégborò l’ójà Oba,” it is basically a story of a man called Adégborò and here is how they came about it.

A brave man called Adegboro left Ibadan for Lagos in search of greener pasture and when he reached there, he chose to be helping people carrying loads (Alábàárù) on his head to earn a living at the Oyingbo market.

Few years after, Adégborò, from his savings, bought a cart and this eased the pain of carrying loads on his head, while it also increased his income because he was able to carry more loads at the same time with help of the cart.

The man, having thought about how to generate more income in the market, acquired 6 more cart which he rented out to other carriers working in the market.

After spending 8 years in the cart pushing business, Adégborò was able to gather a savings more enough to secure a van and he eventually bought a van that was known then by many as “Bolekaja.”

Adégborò proceeded to learn how to drive and started driving, running the business by himself and after 4 years into the Bolekaja business, he had been a proud owner of 6 Vans.

As a bonafide Ibadan son, Adégborò built a magnificent building at Oja Oba where the Olubadan Palace was situated when it was time to put a roof on his head.

At this period, many people approached Adegboro and started asking him to show them the secret behind his success and what he used to asked them was that “can you carry loads on your heads in the market to earn income? And their response had always been “Never”.

He too would spontaneously say ” Eni tíkò sebí aláà árù l’óyìngbò, Kòlè sebí Adégborò l’ójà Oba, “it this is a replica of the adage also in Yoruba land that says; “Ìsasùn tabi Ikoko tiyio ja’ta, Ìdí rèA gbóná”. (A pot that wants to consume a palatable soup must have its bottom burnt or heated with fire first).

This was how the sentence turned into an adage we are speaking, even up till today!!

Lesson Learnt:

In Life, to endure is to achieve. No short cut is sustainable. Enduring wealth is built over time in a small bit but in a persistent way.
