Why Aggrieved Osun APC Members Sacrificed Oyetola As Osun Governor

The time has passed when people’s will are subverted without consequences. If you really want to win an election under the present dispensation, you have to choose a popular candidate loved by his own people. And quite apart from this, your party must be ready not to snuff life out of the party’s internal democracy.

Osun state election is not a rejection of the APC based on performance, but rather, partly, on the inability of the party to manage its internal crisis and, largely, on the indiscriminate imposition of unpopular candidates in the last ruse and kangaroo exercises touted as party’s primaries.

Borrowing from the words of one of the aggrieved, he said: “the recently concluded primary election for House of Representatives held on May 27, 2022 in Osun state was at best a charade as there was no guideline for the election, no meeting held with aspirants to explain the process of election, there were uncertainties on the mode of election until few hours before the date of primary, no accreditation for voters, no independent monitoring officers, results were not collated at the LGA and Federal Constituency collation center, and to make matter worse, there was no returning officer to announce results. Results from each ward were purportedly taken by unknown persons to the Government House in Osogbo for collation without any formal announcements. In most wards, results were written with figures allocated to different aspirants by a few people.” This was how worse the APC’s primaries under the leadership of Governor Gboyega Oyetola in Osun state were. But the governor still went ahead conducting himself as if all was normal.

In any governorship contests, the fate of who emerges winner depends on the popularity of those holding sway for the candidate in different, strategic parts of the states. When you wrongly depend on people who could not deliver their wards and, at worst, even handed them the party’s structure; when you are a poor manager of crisis within the party and you gave no room for the accommodation of aggrieved party members, then you must have to pay or be sacrificed exactly like Oyetola

However, this is not an indication of what to expect in the 2023 presidential poll. Osun state APC’s failure is solely of Oyetola and not of Tinubu. Oyetola’s insensitivity and high-handedness in silence was responsible for his failure. The case of Osun is that of APC shooting down APC from flying. Regardless, the Yorubas are determined to vote for Tinubu. Make no mistake about that and rejoice not in vain.
