Barcelona President Insists “Super League Project Still Alive.”

The President of Football Club Barcelona, Joan Laporta, has reiterated on Sunday that the contentious Super League project “is still alive” despite being criticised by European football’s governing body and condemned to be a crude land grab.

Laporta said this while speaking at a meeting of club members on Sunday.

The Barcelona president claimed the competition would be worth “a minimum of 700 million euros ($830.3 million) per season for Barcelona,” and he, therefore, disclosed that “the project is alive.”

He insisted that the competition would result in financial sustainability for the clubs and makes for a more attractive competition, despite being opposed by UEFA, fans and rival clubs.

Laporta also hit back at UEFA, saying, in the world of football, they can not be forced to apologise for thinking about or organising a competition, or for willing to be masters of their destiny. He also labelled UEFA as a “de facto monopoly.”

Barcelona, Real Madrid and Juventus are the last three clubs that insisted in continue the project after the other nine founding clubs withdrew despite resistance from fans, players and organisations.
