Bobrisky, James Brown, Others In Fear As Reps Propose 6-Month Jail Term For Crossdressers In Nigeria

The National Assembly has reportedly received a bill prohibiting crossdressing in Nigeria, with 6 months imprisonment proposed for offenders, if it’s finally passed into law.

On Tuesday, the bill was introduced by an Honourable member of the House of Representatives, Hon. Umar Muda, and it was read on the floor of the lower chamber.

People like Bobrisky and James Brown who are men but chose to be dressing like a woman have become popular with their chosen lifestyles but the Honourable believed that crossdressing should not be allowed in the country and therefore proposes a sanction for anyone found guilty.

The bill reads:

“A person engaging in crossdressing is guilty of an offence and liable to imprisonment of 6 months or to a fine of five hundred thousand naira.”

According to reports, the bill is with the exemption of those using it for entertainment.

However, if the bill scales through the second and third readings, and finally signed into law, several notable crossdressers in the country may be looking at six years behind bars.

The bill also seeks to amend the Same Sex Marriage (Prohibition) Act of 2013 by including crossdressing as one of the offences under the Act.

Recall that in Nigeria, same sex marriage and being a gay person attracts 14 years jail term if convicted by a court.
