June 12, 1993 was the day on which Moshood Abiola is believed to have won the Nigerian presidential election but the results were annulled by military president General Ibrahim Babangida after allegations of corruption.
This was followed a few months later by a military coup by General Sani Abacha who had Abiola arrested for treason. He was detained for 4 years, time mostly spent in solitary confinement. He died on July 7,1998 at the age of 60, the day he was supposed to be released from prison.
June 12 is a tradition that has been held annually, beginning in year 2000. It was formerly known as Abiola Day, celebrated in Lagos, Nigeria and some south western states of Nigeria.
It was later acknowledged and declared a public holiday by the Administration of President Muhammadu Buhari as Nigeria’s Nigeria’s Democracy Day and as a public holiday to commemorate the restoration of democracy in the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
