JUST IN: Top Yoruba Monarch, Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi, Is Dead

The Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi, Iku Baba Yeye, the third from the Alowodu Ruling House, has reportedly died in the late hours of Friday at the Afe Babalola University Teaching Hospital, Ado-Ekiti, the Capital City of Ekiti State.

Sources disclosed that the traditional rites has begun as the remains of the Yoruba traditional ruler were brought to Oyo in the early hours of Saturday.

Oba Lamidi Adeyemi was 83-year-old before he died and he was the longest-reigning Alaafin ever, having ruled for 52 years.

The Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, is expected to make an official announcement having received the news of the monarch’s death from, Yusuf Akinade, the Bashorun of Oyo, who is the head of the ‘Oyo Mesi’, and the person that will now lead Oyo pending the time a new Alaafin will install.

According to reports, the monarch had been sick and a plan had been made to fly him abroad before he gave up the ghost late Friday night. It was confirmed from a source familiar with the medical travel plan that his ticket and those of a few wives who will go with him had already been procured.

The death of Alaafin now sums up the passes on of senior Oyo State monarchs, in less than five months, to three after the death of the Olubadan of Ibadan, Saliu Adetunji, and the Soun of Ogbomoso, Jimoh Oyewumi.

A new Olubadan has been installed while the Soun remains vacant.

With the demise of Alaafin Adeyemi, it is now the turn of the Agunloye Ruling House to produce the next Oyo monarch.

It was gathered from the history that Oba Lamidi Adeyemi’s predecessor, Bello Ladigbolu, was from the Agunloye House and now, it is their turn to lead ‘Oyo Mesi’ again.
