While some of us do not value our local languages and only pride ourselves for being vast in some foreign languages, a portuguese who goes by the name Thiago Ishola, has chosen Yoruba as his first language and promises he would pass the same legacy to his children.
Thiago Ishola, popularly known as Oyinbo Ibile, was born to Portuguese parents, but found himself in Nigeria when his mother came to Nigeria to work with the Alaafin of Oyo as a Cultural Ambassador.
In an interview he granted with the BBC Yoruba, Thiago revealed that he was brought to the palace of the Alaafin of Oyo by his mother at the age of ten, and it was right in the palace they gave him the name ‘Ishola’.
Over time, Thiago learnt to speak Yoruba very fluently and he is presently a student of the University of Ibadan, where he’s also studying Yoruba.
While growing up, Thiago had his secondary school education in Oyo state, and by being friends and classmates with Yoruba people, he learnt to speak Yoruba, albeit very fluently.
Thiago expressed his deep love for Yoruba language and stated that he always derives so much joy in communicating with people in Yoruba language. He said that so many people often gift him a lot of things when they see him speaking Yoruba, and in doing this, he feels vey happy and appreciative.
Thiago emphasized that he rarely eat rice, but rather loves to eat Yoruba foods very much, especially Gbegiri and Amala. He stated further that he has chosen Yoruba as his first language and has decided to speak it for the rest of his life, even as he will pass the legacy to his children.
Oyinbo Ibile wondered why some Yoruba people do not always love to speak their language, but rather do prefer to speak much of English language, noting that reverse is his own case.
