Incumbent Governor and Governor-elect in Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on Monday expressed his disappointment with the “very divisive rhetoric” witnessed in the 2023 election and called for unity among Lagosians no matter their religion and ethnicity traits.
Governor Sanwo-Olu was reacting to his electoral victory in the state governorship election held over the weekend.
In the early hours of Monday, The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), declared him the winner of the election.
Speaking shortly after the declaration, Governor Sanwo-Olu called for unity.
“During this campaign, unfortunately, we have seen very divisive rhetoric which is not a definition of who we are.
“So, Lagosians, we need to come together and further rebuild the capacity, the competence, and the experience that we have in this city.
“Religion should not divide us, ethnicity will not divide us. Lagos will come out bigger, stronger, and better,” Sanwo-Olu said.
Meanwhile, second-placed Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, the candidate of the Labour Party, has rejected the outcome of the March 18 election, saying he would not call Governor Sanwo-Olu to congratulate him.
