APC is not getting things easy at the moment as the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has rejected the new Acting National Chairman, Governor Bello Abubakar of Niger State, saying the electoral body was not informed before the decision to change the leadership of the party was made.
Recall that Governor of Yobe State, Mai Buni, who was the Chairman of Caretaker Extraordinary Convention Planning Committee (CECPC) of the party was replaced by Governor Abubakar Bello of Niger State in a controversial circumstance.
According to information from a reliable source, when the new Acting Chairman assumed office and transmitted a letter to INEC on the 9th of March to inform the electoral umpire of the change of guard, the Commission frowned at the letter, saying such a vital decision could not have been taken without prior notice to the body.
In the letter signed by both Bello and Tahir to inform the Commision of the Party’s decision to hold a National Exexutive Committee (NEC) meeting for next week Thursday, 17th March, 2022, Bello was said to have introduced himself as the Acting Chairman while Professor Tahir Mamman was introduced as the acting Secretary of the party.
However, the Commission reportedly replied to the letter on Thursday, 10th March 2022, saying it was not aware of any change of leadership in APC. The Commission noted further that the letter remains strange as there was no time the Commission was invited to observe or monitor any meeting where the changes took place, hence, the letter was rejected.
The Commission’s letter read: “Section 82(2-3) of the Electoral Act 2022 (as amended) makes it mandatory for all registered political parties in Nigeria to involve INEC in any meeting, congress or convention where elections or decisions to nominate executives or governing bodies of the party shall be taken.
“The same section also provided that, in a case of replacement of any vacant position in the party, INEC must be fully involved too” the Source revealed.
“The Commission was not invited to any meeting or Congress where Mai Buni was removed as Chairman, and as such, could not deal with what was not legally constituted.”
