Lagos State Police Authorities have reportedly disclosed that the 10-month-old baby the dispatch rider was arrested for in Ajah area of the state was not stolen but was taken away with the consent of his mother.

In a statement released and signed on Monday by Adekunle Ajisebutu, the police authorities noted that the dispatch rider and mother of the baby were neighbours and the baby liked being with the rider.

Ajisebutu confirmed that the police authorities have reached out to the mother of the baby, Lovina Bitrus and it was revealed by the mother that her child was not stolen but was deliberately put on the dispatch motorbike by the rider with her consent.

Part of the statement reads:

“Investigation was initiated and this led to the discovery of the scene. Upon further investigation, it was discovered that the child was not stolen after all and that he was not kept in the courier box as alleged by the mob.

“The child’s mother, Lovina Biturs, was contacted. It was then revealed that the child was actually taken away and put on the dispatch motorbike by the rider with the consent of his mother.

The mother of the baby noted that the baby liked being with the rider because he’s a neighbour and more of a relative, adding that the baby was crying uncontrollably when the dispatch rider wanted to go on a trip and to appease the baby, he was allowed to go with the rider.

“According to the mother, the 10-month-old baby is fond of the rider who is a relative, a neighbour and was crying uncontrollably when he (rider) wanted to go pick up something in the neighbourhood. To pacify the baby, his mother allowed him to go with the rider,” the statement reads further.

The dispatch rider was arrested on 11th March 2022, after he was accused of stealing a child and concealed him in a courier box. His video which was recorded by mob later went viral on social media. It would later lead to his apprehension.

The whole scenario started when the child was seen with the rider by the passers-by along Sangotedo area, Ajah on the said day. They became suspicious and therefore concluded that the baby might have been stolen by the rider and however raised alarm which attracted a mob.

The rider was subsequently attacked by the mob and he was beaten without finding out the truth. He was later rescued by the Chairman of the Sunview Estate, Sangotedo.
