Amid the ongoing heated argument between two major ethnic groups in Lagos ahead of the governorship elections slated for Saturday, March 18, 2023, prominent southwest politician, and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain, Lere Olayinka has come out to share his thoughts on claims being made by certain tribes who refer to the state as ‘no man’s land’ due to its history as a British colony.
Taking to his verified Facebook page an hour ago, Olayinka, who recently contested for a seat at the Federal House of Representatives in Ekiti State, argued that Lagos cannot be given such a title simply because it was once colonized by the British.
To buttress his point, the PDP chieftain argued that the city of Calabar in Cross River State also enjoyed the same level of British colonialism and foreign influence as Lagos but is yet to be dubbed as ‘no man’s land’ the same way its southwestern counterpart is being regarded by Nigerians.
He wrote; “Just like Eko was changed to Lagos by the Portuguese, the original name of Calabar was Akwa Akpa.
Like Lagos, Calabar was colonized by the British. In fact, it was the headquarter of the European administration in the Niger Delta until 1906. Calabar is now the capital of Cross River State. Is Calabar a no man’s land?”
