The Minister of Justice and Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami has withdrawn from the race to succeed Governor Atiku Bagudu of Kebbi State.
Malami decided last month to join the race to run for the Kebbi governorship election, after months of speculations.
After the declaration, the minister appealed for people’s support and he was alleged of sharing exotic cars gift for delegates to secure the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) ticket.
This had triggered backlash as some said it was a move to get Malami soft landing ahead of the APC governorship primaries.
However, the minister while clearing air on the allegation declared that the cars was shared by his foundation and it was not shared to APC chieftains in Kebbi but some of his associates and workers at the Khadimiyya for Justice and Development Initiative, a foundation he established.
Meanwhile, reports suggested that some APC executives in some wards and local government had pledged their support to the minister.
On Friday, it was gathered that the minster, who was among those President Muhammadu Buhari bided farewell at Aso Rock earlier in the day, had opted out of the race.
Daily Trust confirmed that Malami had withdrawn from the race. It was further revealed that the minister’s media aide, Umar Gwandu, also confirmed Malami’s withdrawal from the race when he was contacted.
President Muhammadu Buhari had ordered his appointees with interest in the 2023 election to step down.
