Nigerian Government to Evacuate Nigerians in Ukraine This Week

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama, has declared that the Federal goveenment of Nigeria will commence the evacuation of Nigerians in Ukraine this week.

He made this known during an interview on Channels Television on Monday, noting that the evacuation will be done through Ukraine’s neighbouring countries and via Air peace Nigeria.

Russia and its neighbouring Ukraine have been in war for the past four days, and many Ukrainians and those from other countries who reside in Ukraine have fled to other nearby countries to escape the war torn country. This has now provided an opportunity for the Nigerian government to airlift its citizens who might have been scattered in conutries that shared borders with Ukraine.

According to the Aviation Minister, evacuation flights to Nigeria are expected to commence from Ukraine’s neighbouring countries this week via Airpeace and Max Airline.

Geoffrey highlighted that a total of about 5,600 Nigerian students are in Ukraine, and taking the population of others who are not student with it, a total of around 8,000 Nigerians are all in Ukraine. As it stands now, around 1000 of them have crossed into Romania from Ukraine, and those would be airlifted in the coming days.

He stated further that report has indicated that some Nigerians living in Ukraine have also successfully crossed into Poland and Hungary, and around 150 of them also fled to Sumy, Ukraine, for whom Russia is closest border.

Note that not all the Nigerians in Ukraine may want to leave or be evacuated. But @NigeriaGov is saying all those who want to, and are able to make their way out, to a neighboring country (Ukraine airspace is currently closed to commercial flights), will be evacuated.
