The last may not have been heard of the controversies surrounding the emergence of Professor Adebayo Bamire as the Vice-Chancelor of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, as some masquerades, backed up by a group of charm-wielding followers, invaded the university campus and carried sacrifices to invoke the spirit of the ancestors against the new vice-chancelor.
In a viral video now circulating online, two masquerades, backed up by some youths and drummers, invaded the university campus and carrying traditionally made sacrifices to rain curses against the leadership of the university – an indication that the leadership tussle has now taken a dangerously new dimension.
Prof Bamire, who is an indegene of Oyan in Odo-otin Local government area of Osun state, was appointed as the Vice-chancellor of the university, but the appointment has been greeted with protests from Ile-Ife Indigenes, who want an indigene to be appointed into the office for the first time in 61 years of the institution’s existence.

One of such protests has had some traditionalists dressed in their full occultic regalia beseiging the university campus, and demanding the removal of Bamire to be replaced by an Ife indigene. As if that is not enough, some masquerades, who were carrying pots of traditional sacrifices, have now invaded the campus to invoke the spirit of the ancestors to work against the leadership of Professor Bamire as the Vice-Chancellor.

Many obsersers have called on the Ooni of Ife, a topmost traditional ruler of Yoruba land, to caution those engaging in unguarded protest against a fellow yoruba man that will only paint Ile-ife in a very bad light, given the fact that Ile-Ife is considered as the cradle of Yoruba existence
