Reno Omokri, a Nigerian lawyer, bestselling author and human rights activist, has thrown his support for a Nigerian Nollywood actor, Yul Edochie, who is currently under social media attack for having a baby with another woman after being married to her first wife 17 years ago.
Omokri, in a series of tweets, posted on his official verified Twitter handle, @renoomokri, backed the actor and gives different Scripture evidence to back his points.
Many people believed that as a Christian, he’s not allowed to marry more than one wife because it is written in Bible, and therefore they have chosen to start criticising the actor for doing what was against his religious belief.
However, Reno Omokri, in his contrary opinion, has come out to defend Edochie, saying marrying more than one wife is not a sin and there is nowhere in the Bible where God forbid polygamy. He, therefore, declares that the actor has done nothing wrong.
The lawyer stressed that it is written in the book of 2 Samuel 12:8 that God himself gave David many wives, while it is also confirmed in the book of 1 Timothy 3:2 that polygamy is only forbidden for Bishops and elders in the church. He added that Monogamy is a Western construct and not a Christian one.
“In my opinion, @YulEdochie has done no wrong. Polygamy is not a sin. God Himself gave David many wives-2 Samuel 12:8. Polygamy is only forbidden for Bishops, and elders in the church-1 Timothy 3:2. Monogamy is a Western construct, not a Christian one,” he said.
The human rights activist said it is saddening how Africans accept blindly, a Western construct called monogamy, as a Christian one. He added that Africans will kick against marrying more than one wife but give a nod to same sex marriage.
Stressing further, he reiterated that, according to 2 Samuel 12:8, God supports polygamy but gay marriage is abominable in His sight, as it was written in Leviticus 18:22. He added:
“Sadly, Black Africans accept this Western construct called monogamy, as a Christian one. Which is why we are now tolerant of same sex marriage, and intolerant of polygamy. Meanwhile, God supports polygamy-2 Samuel 12:8, and gay marriage is abominable in His sight-Leviticus 18:22.”
Omokri explained further that in the book of Exodus 21:10, it was noted that polygamy is scriptural and in the real sense single woman is not fit to satisfy the libido of a normal man.
He noted that the inability of a single woman to satisfy a man’s libido is the reason why there is a high rate of cheating in society and gave the example of a comparison between the rate of adultery in Europe and America with that of Saudi Arabia. He said:
“Polygamy is Scriptural-Exodus 21:10. It is hard for a single woman to satisfy the libido of a normal man. It is why we have a high rate of cheating in our society. Compare the rate of adultery in Europe and America, with that of Saudi Arabia and point becomes clear.”
The lawyer argued that adultery is a sin but polygamy is not because it is not forbidden in the Bible and declared that nobody has the moral right to condemn the actor for marrying another wife.
“Of course adultery is a sin-Hebrews 13:4. But Polygamy isn’t a sin. Scripture is clear on that in Exodus 21:10. The same people who say that’s the law will also collect tithes. In Nigeria we celebrate cross dressers. We have no moral right to condemn Yul!
