In what now seems as an outright rejection of Nigeria by the multinationals and foreign investors, Hyundai and Kia Automobiles are now set to build their assembly plant in Ghana, in the same manner Toyota, Suzuki, Nissan, Kantanka, Volkswagen and Sinotruck have done.
This is coming barely two weeks after Twitter and Amazon also snubbed Nigeria to establish their respective African headquarters in Ghana.
The two automobile giants are now preparing to start the construction of their assembly plants soon, and would be targeting its completion on or before the end of next year; meaning that they both will now start assembling their vehicles in Ghana, from where they will distribute to other African countries, including Nigeria, for sale.
The grave implication of this is that when the two automobile companies float the distribution of their brands in African market, then Nigeria will have to depend on Ghana for car importation.
The position of the automobile companies to site their assembly plants in Ghana was made known on Thursday by the country’s Trade Minister, Alan Kyerematen, via his verified Twitter handle @alankyerematen, noting that the automobile giants have through their representatives declared their intention to do their business in Ghana.
The tweet reads:
Pleased to announce that Hyundai & KIA are set to establish assembly plants in Ghana by the end of 2022 to join Toyota-Suzuki, Nissan, Kantanka, Volkswagen & Sinotruck. “The Ghana Auto Development programme = 3,600 assembly & 6,600 manufacturing parts jobs in Ghana. #InvestforJobs.”
