Rochas is Calling Jagaban “Uncle” Instead of Brother, Shehu Sani Wonders

A human right activist and former Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria representing Kaduna Central Senatorial district, Shehu Sani, seems to be confused as to why the former Imo State governor, Rochas Okorocha, was referring to APC national leader and Presidential Aspirant, Asiwaju Ahmed Tinubu, as an uncle rather than a brother in a recent interview on the chances of APC in 2023 elections.

Mr Okorocha, a senator and former governor of Imo, while fielding questions from journalists at the All Progressives Congress (APC) National Convention in Abuja on Sunday, has said that he will persuade Asiwaju Ahmed Tinubu to give him (Okorocha) the opportunity of being presented by the party as the presidential candidate to give way to a South-East Presidency. But in the process of answering the journalists, he resorted into calling the APC national leader and presidential aspirant, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, his Uncle, and this has drawn a lot reactions on the internet.

In his statement, he said: “Uncle Tinubu and I are most likely to be (the major candidates from Southern Nigeria).

“I know that at the appropriate time, it may be because he is the one pushing up in the South-west and I am in the South-east.

“So let us see what happens between us. And if that is it, I will ask him to relax a bit so that we can move this section forward.

“The people naturally love me and I think it is because they believe I care, they believe I love and have sympathy for humanity, they believe I am detribalised.”

The fact that Okorocha used Uncle to qualify Tinubu has now caught the attention of Shehu Sani, who then rushed to his verified Twitter handle to share his amazement as to why Okorocha resorted into calling Tinubu an Uncle instead of a brother.

“Rochas is calling Jagaban “Uncle” instead of Brother..ehh,” Shehu Sani wrote in the tweet.

Many Nigerians rushed to the comment section to share their views: While some descent on Okorocha to mock him, some also justify his statement by saying is that Uncle in African parlance is ordinarily a sign of respect as Tinubu is older than him.
