Tinubu

You may not like him because some people had sold a grim picture of him to you sometimes in the past; you may not want to hear his name because he had once supported a different presidential candidate from the one you probably adored and admired; hate him or love him, Bola Ahmed Tinubu has been a vibrant politician with the finest leadership qualities. He is one man with values, brains and the ability to turn vision into reality. He stands out from the crowd of selfish politicians who practise politics of bitterness. He is such a fine, gentle and brilliant political sage.

Jagaban of Borgu, as he is fondly called, is one man who exudes an enormous intellectual capability to lead the nation Nigeria, and has proven times without number that he has passion, conviction and strong ability to juxtapose human and non-human resources into achieving meaningful development. But quite apart from these, one more thing stands him out: He is an unrepentant lover of the Igbo people.

Time and history have shown his love for the Ndigbo. His track records as the governor of Lagos state, who boldly involved everyone, especially people of Igbo extraction, into mainstream Lagos politics is also a testimony.

As at the time he won re-election into office in April 2003-2007, Tinubu’s interest and love for the Ndigbo blossomed. He gave much freedom to everyone who live in Lagos, irrespective of tribes. Much was attributed to Bola Ahmed Tinubu as regards Lagos politics, most especially his appointment of an Igbo man Joe Igbokwe as the party’s publicity secretary who served in that capacity for 10 solid years.

When the appointment of outsiders into a sensitive position of another state was considered a taboo in almost all other states of the Federation at that material time, former Lagos State Governor, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, appointed former Managing Director of NAL Bank Plc, Mr Ben Akabueze, as the commissioner of Budget and Economic Planning. Akabueze hails from Anambra State and succeeded Dr Adebayo Adewusi, who resigned to pursue his interests in politics.

Tinubu loves igbo brothers from the east and showed this by letting them conduct their business without hitches. Igbo students in Lagos government secondary schools were treated in equal manners with the Yorubas without any discrimination in West African Examinations Council (WAEC) and National Examination Council (NECO) registration fees that were paid by his Administration. Even admission into Lagos tertiary institutions was purely based on merit without discrimination on where any candidates come from. Payment of tuition fees were also generalized without any lopsidedness based on ethnicity. But that is not all.

Under Tinubu’s leadership of APC in Lagos, Igbo have benefitted so much from the APC government as Jagaban is specifically instrumental in the aversion of the demolition of Auto Spare Parts and Machinery Dealers Association (ASPAMDA) business district, owned majorly by the Igbo.

What further proofs! Tinubu truly loves the Igbo, and he has shown this several times. Isn’t it now time to reciprocate his good gestures? Igbo nation need to rally round this detribalized Nigeria.
