Tinubu and 2023 Presidency: Let’s Take A Moment of Deep Reflection Before We Waste the Golden Opportunity

Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu

The world has changed so much. People are now preoccupied with their day-to-day businesses and engrossed in their daily hustles for survival that they only have just little time for other things. Nobody is ready to read long piece, I mean extremely long peice anymore. So, I have to be as brief as possible.

I am here to make a case for Asiwaju Ahmed Tinubu – the man who has swum in the deep sea of Nigerian politics, but although he’s been dragged, pulled and wrenched, he isn’t drowned. More surprisingly, the rugged man remains unruffled.

Since he declared his intention to contest for Nigeria’s Presidency in 2023, Tinubu has constantly become the talk of the town. He tops major political discussions on social media and relevant media houses. Many love and praise him for his political wit. Some hate him for being politically relevant despite that he last held a political office some 15 years ago. And the last set of people are those who now blame him for the woes of the present Administration.

I am not saying President Buhari hasn’t performed, but some people believe he hasn’t. And so the person to pay for it is Tinubu because he is a core party man.

President Muhammadu Buhari and Tinubu when he visited the president to inform him of his presidential ambition

There are two ways to every issue: no one can all be wrong or vice-versa. So, it is understandable why many are venting the anger of Buhari’s Administration on Asiwaju Tinubu. After all, he campaigned vigorously as a party man and vouched for the General.

But it is not like the Federal Government of Nigeria as presently constituted is Tinubu-led; he is not even the vice-president nor the senate president, nonetheless, as a key leader of the ruling party, many assume he needed to be judged on the actions and inactions of others. He has no escape route, and he’s taking all the blames in good faith.

This is exactly why Jagaban has taken the bull by the horn by declaring to step in the shoes of the Incumbent. He wants to be in full control this time to deal with any lapses, if any, of the present Administration. After all, if he could share from the blame, he shouldn’t be deprived of the opportunity to make amends.

However, the envious won’t let him rest. They decided to plot against him from the very beginning. He was painted a sick man, whose physical and mental capability could not match the demand of the highest political office in Nigeria.

Coincidentally, Tinubu went for an ankle surgery in London when he noticed one of his ankles was getting tired for the vigorous political task ahead. As a rare leader who has a soft spot for our own, and keen eyes for spotting the best brains among Nigerians and using them for the right task, Tinubu made a wise choice of using a Nigerian Medical Doctor from Ekiti state to carry out the surgery. He might have stayed a few month in the UK, but every lovers of sport, most especially football, knows that an ankle surgery takes a bit of time to heal, so the stay was justified, and not necessarily a sign of prolonged illness as Tinubu”s detractors had insuniated.

Although well hatched, that campaign of calumny seems to be fast crumbling before the very eyes of the plotters. Or how do we prove that a man who’s criss-crossing the nooks and crannies of the country in consultation alone isn’t physicallt fit? No way!

Then they regrouped again and said, “if these blackmails aren’t working, let us just put all the blames of the present Administration on him to simply nail him.”

They attacked Tinubu for saying he will build on the legacies of Buhari’s Administration. They condemned that very statement to the high heavens, saying building on Buhari’s legacies means the statusquo will remain and that the business of governance will only continue in the way of the present.

But what they failed to understand is that government is a continuum. Building on, in Tinubu’s context, is simply that he will restrategize, re-engineer and fine-tune the policies of the present administration to deliver on the remaining of the party’s electoral promises. After all, good governance would only stem from building on the performance of your predecessor and making necessary changes that would turn potentials into prosperity.

Apparently, every discerning mind knows this, but wailers still find fault with it anyway. They don’t want him to build on the existing legacies, they just want him to start building on nothing. They failed to realize that even in practical science, a succeeding scientists only build on the existing model to make a whole new invention. But the smart Tinubu, who has the antecedence of nurturing promises into reality, knows it all. He can see far ahead of them, and he is well prepared for the onerous task ahead.

Having said all these, we need to understand that the whole calamities that have befallen this nation aren’t limited to a particular past administration, It’s all about the cummulative effects of leadership failures since 80s. However, Tinubu is in a different class of leaders. He has got the brains and the experience to do things differently to get Nigeria’s project working again. Like in the game of soccer, Tinubu is simply the necessary substitution needed to give Nigeria the smart goals.

Tinubu has never been a failure. His leadership capacity is not in the level of those who have failed Nigerians in the past. Tinubu is an intellectual powerhouse and has the capacity to think out of the box. These are what distinguish him from others. There’s no need for doubt, Nigeria under Tinubu’s leadership will witness a complete transformation. He has the brains and the will; he has the leadership prowess.

Tinubu is the brain-box of the new Lagos; he drew the template for Lagos socio-economic development. We can only talk about Lagos, because he has never held any political position outside that. Lagos state that he helped built and helped drawn its developmental template is the most viable state in Nigeria today. Aside this, Lagos is one of the states with the best civil service runumerations and condition of service.

From a GDP of next to nothing, Tinubu laid the foundation that helped Lagos Gross Domestic Product [GDP] accounted for 26.7% of Nigeria’s total GDP and more than 50% of non-oil GDP.

If you do not see anything good in the viability of Lagos among the states of the Federation who only struggle to pay salaries while many even owing senior citizens pensions and gratuities, and you also do not value the Lagos state’s level of socio-economic development that is far above other states, then you probably do have something personal against Tinubu.

Asiwaju Tinubu is vying for the post of Nigeria’s presidency with the best credentials no one, apart from Obafemi Awolowo, had brought on table. Some lament he has made Lagos his Enterprise, but if we only want to deal with issues and not mere pettiness, calling Lagos state his enterprise is out of place, because other states that are not categorized as anyone’s enterprise can’t even stand side by side with Lagos. So, what is the point?

President Buhari has done his best. You may say he hasn’t, but that is even becoming increasingly unnecessary as his Administration is fast winding up to its very end. It is now time we need to look beyond him.

Tinubu is a very good student of politics if you may not permit me to say master, I am sure he knows exactly what to do. He is vast, brilliant and politically, economically sound. Only God is perfect and completely reliable. But I am not in doubt that Tinubu has the brains to turn things around. In all, most Nigerians can attest that Tinubu is a strategic thinker with a formidable frontier spirit whose irrepressible doggedness can change the story of Nigeria to success.
